STARBASE HILL HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
On Friday, January 31st, STARBASE Hill was shut down until further notice. Although completely unexpected, this was due to a lack of funding at the Federal level.
This situation began in September of 2024 when the Senate solidified their proposal of $20M for the DoD STARBASE budget, after the House proposed a $60M budget. Next, DoD STARBASE was eliminated from participating in the Continuing Resolution (CR) process until the FY(Fiscal Year)2025 Defense Budget could be approved. This would have allowed DoD STARBASE to operated under the previous year's budget of $53M, which would have definitely kept our doors open. This meant this year's budget for DoD STARBASE operations unknowingly fell to the Senate's $20M proposal.
We need YOUR help. Express to everyone the truly great service STARBASE Hill provides to approximately 2700 students each year through our 5-day, hands-on, mind-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) program. How this FREE program gives those students who find themselves in an underprivileged situation or underrepresented demographic in STEAM careers the opportunity they might not normally receive. Each participating student gains enthusiasm and knowledge toward STEAM opportunities, as well as confidence in themselves and others leading them to success throughout their educational and life careers. Furthermore, 15 caring, knowledgeable and professional people were laid off immediately from their positions at STARBASE Hill. There was NO notice or severance given to these faithful employees of STARBASE Hill.
Contact our Utah Senators, Sen Mike Lee and Sen John Curtis, to voice concerns over the closure of our community's educational benefit. Unfortunately, as neither of our Utah Senators serve on the Senate Appropriations Committee, or Senate Armed Forces Committee for that matter, please reach out to those national Senators who do (list following this write-up) to dishearteningly express the absence of a beloved and important program. There are 90 STARBASE sites nationwide with many of them experiencing almost the exact same scenario.
STARBASE Hill cannot say whether this will be a short closure, a permanent closure, or anywhere in between. All it can say is only through your help and support will any action take place toward the benefit of STARBASE Hill and DoD STARBASE.
Thank you so much for your efforts in the past!
HAPPY 2025 TO ALL!!
JUST LIKE THAT...
Happy New Year!! Welcome to 2025!! STARBASE Hill had an outstanding 2024 as we fulfilled our STEAM journey with over 2500 students and almost 50 schools. Introducing STEAM phenomena to students brings joy to each of us at STARBASE Hill. Students from all over and, during our summer camps, outside of Utah, attended our programs. Students uncovered mysteries in Chemistry, Physics, Technology and Engineering, just to name a few. Further expanding their imagination toward future possibilities in STEAM cements the dedication members of STARBASE Hill exude daily. With 2024 over, STARBASE Hill now has Lincoln, Crestview, Municipal, South Clearfield, and Holt elementary schools gracing the halls of our Academy, while Hill Field Elementary, West Point Middle and Sunset Middle explore diligently with our Advanced Team! We look to continue enhancing and expanding our programs. Please stand by for summer camp announcements just after Spring Break as these slots fill extremely quick.
Take care,
