STARBASE Hill, Utah

Starbase History

The activities and experiments they did here are directly related to our instructional standards, and we have been able to connect the things they have done (at STARBASE Hill) to what we are doing in the classroom.
                     Mrs. Marilyn Christensen
                     5th Grade Teacher, Whitesides Elementary

The DoD STARBASE Program first originated in Detroit, Michigan as Project STARS in 1991. The curriculum, designed by Barbara Koscak and Rick Simms, focused on exposing at-risk youth, (4-6 grade) to innovative hands-on activities in science, technology and mathematics based on the physics of flight. Under the guidance of Brig. Gen. David Arendts, 127th wing commander at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, students were invited to Selfridge to participate and witness the application of scientific concepts in a “real world” setting. National Guard personnel demonstrated the use of science, mathematics, engineering, and technology in their fields of expertise and served as role models to the attending students.

In FY 1993, the U.S. Congress appropriated funds for DoD STARBASE and piloted the program in seven states. Since that time the number of locations has grown to 69 locations throughout the United States including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

STARBASE Hill first opened its doors in September of 2011.  With the likes of Mighty Mouse, Wonderland and Dancing Queen. STARBASE Hill first brought in students from throughout the Davis School District for adventures in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.  Since the inception of the STARBASE program here in Utah, over 9000 students have enhanced their knowledge and enthusiasm toward STEM on Hill Air Force Base.  Now with Batman, Peppermint Pattie, Skyfire and more, students from around Davis and Weber county orchestrate a love for STEM, and with the addition of STARBASE 2.0, Solo and her gang extend this opportunity to the middle school-aged students throughout the area as well!  We hope to see you soon for fun discoveries in STEM at STARBASE Hill!!!
